Opening its doors just three weeks ago, this “Middleterranean” breakfast/ lunch spot is already a hit with the locals. Attracting New Schoolers and their Union Square neighbors as regulars, Taboonette is making a buzz with its mix of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine. Taboonette is the little sister to Taboon, the Hell’s Kitchen fine dinning favorite. Taboonette is a smaller, to go version, but its cuisine is just as large in flavor.
Named after the taboon, a brick oven typical to the middle east, the to-go spot bakes all of their meats, pitas and veggies in this special heater. The décor is sleek and simple, with a close and charming attention to detail. As if the delicious food and sleek decor was not enough, adding to the charm of the place is the fact that it is a family run business. Started by a couple, the mother Israeli and the father American, it is managed by their son, who’s uncle, a top chef in Israel, built the menu. “We went to Israel to brainstorm, to taste food, to bring stuff over here..” says their son. “We work with the family”.
From their relaxed picnic table seating, to their excellent Italian Caffee Mauro roast coffee, the vibe is young, easy, inviting, and most importantly, their food gratifying and inexpensive. Taboonette has everything you could ask for in a delicious and quick place to eat.
